Hello all

Wasn't going to post this but after thinking about it here we go. While on my trip a couple weeks ago I turned off on north end of Highway 1 in California at Leggit and headed south. The first part of this road is very twisty and narrow. I pass a couple guys on crotch rockets on the side of the road repacking one bike. I get down through the twisty and hit the first straight stretch and I'm half a mile from the ocean as I know this area pretty good. I can see the sport bikes in my mirror so I get on it and I'm up about 55 to 60 and out runs a 400 plus pound black bear. Instant brakes and I miss the bear by about 15 feet way too close for comfort. Not really rattled too much as I have seen bears in the area before but not this big. So I think about this later and what do you do if you hit the bear and don't kill it or hurt it bad enough to slow it down. It will probably be on the bike with you or close enough to finish you off because it will be pissed off. Or the 2 sport bikes may stop and help but not likely. So I go down the road a little farther and let the sport bikes pass and then the next wide spot the sport bikes are pulled over and waving me to stop. Pulled in and talked with these guys and they wondered what had crossed in front of me the one who had laid his bike down was pretty shook up as he thought it could have been big foot. His friend and me got a big laugh out of that and I explained it was a big black bear and not big foot. So on my last leg of the trip I stay in Nevada city and leave early in the morning and take highway 49 up through Sierra Ville and a sow and 2 cubs go across the road in front of me with lots of room to avoid them easily. I think the bear population is fine in California right now so be careful riding in the hills lol.

So this should be fun what would you do??

Damn seen a lot of wildlife but never black bears. Would hate to hit one of those as I don't think you would kill it and then you would have a pissed off bear.

I would have gone along with the big foot thing and freaked out the sports bike rider. Lol

I work in boulder, here is the most common form of wild life there. (right next to the campus) What a job I have.cheer leaders.jpg

Just got home from a 3 day 1100 mile loop in Idaho & yesterday on a 300 mile leg we saw 30 plus Deer & 5 Antelope & 2 Turkeys along the Highways 21, 75 & 93 between Boise & Salmon.

I would have to say the best option is make sure the 45 is in the saddle bag

Back in the day of dirt biking we would throw our ass as far back (over the back fender) and twist the gas grip to full power. Some times it worked sometimes it hurts. In PA the deer go into the rut about this time and I don't ride much in the dark. Those bastard will run you over for some tang.

I was damn close to smoking a very fat coon this morning on my way home from work.

We "drove" a 7 mile loop from the house tonight, counted 42 deer around dusk!
