2016 gas tank hard to fill

I agree with you that the door does get in the way. IMHO I believe that the MoCo could have allowed the door to open a little more making it easier to fill the tank.

fill it slow and easy try to stand to the side in front of the tank so you can monitor the progress// if they would have made the tank door to open the opposite direction it would have made filling easier just my opinion

I thought I was the only one. I think I fill it neatly 1 time out of 10 without splashing.
The door either needs to open wider or the other direction. It's kind of crazy how something so simple was made to be so difficult.
Yes fill the tank slowly don't just crank it up and wait for it to shut off. The reason the door is like that now is because if it was the other way and you were in an accident sliding over the tank and door comes open you loose your manhood.

maybe they could do it like the old fat bob tanks put the fill cap on the right side of the tanks
makes more sense the fill position would be on the high side when bike is resting on the stand // eliminate the problem with the hinge // you could fill standing on the side visibility and control would be better

That is one of my big complaints about this bike, the tank door arrangement. I also found the stock bars get in the way so I park at the pump with the bars turned fully to the right (filling on the left). A tank door that doesn't get in the way would sure be nice!
If you really want every ounce of gas possible, slowly fill it to the neck then shake the bike to break the air bubble. I can do this 5-8 times before she's 'really' full.

That's my technique and it's the best way I've found. I rarely spill over but it will happen if you rush it.

Actually, my '16 SGS is one if the easiest to fill. I'm right handed but park so the pump is on my left. I hold the nozzle in a very upright position with my left hand. And my right hand is guiding it also. The hose never touches my bike.
BTW, with the V&H Power Duals and FP3, I went 264 miles in 4.9gal. That's 53.8 mpg. Damn good I think.

Living in California, we get to have the additional
Snorkel recovery on the gas nozzle. When fueling up any of my bikes I pull that back and watch the fuel fill the tank . Never any problem with this

Dang it...someone beat me to it....the 'advantages' of living in California.....where it takes three hands to fill your tank.
I'm with doc_63 on this method. Grab a couple of window wash towels from the dispenser and hold under the bottom side of the nozzle, fill standing on the left side as the bike leans into the side stand. Occasionally I have had to fill standing on the right side with bike leaning away which seems more cumbersome and I have torched my leg on the hot pipes a couple of times doing that. Ouch!
