New SGS owner, need help please.

I read this thread and didn't understand it. I guess being short helps. 5'7", I have the 7" wind splitter and my bikes handles awesome. I upgraded from a 1998 Road King with a Klockwerks windshield and I love the way the bike handles. Hate to say it but all the way up to 115mph. Biggest problem is, it handles so well the first month I had problems with speed. It feels like 75 or 80 mph and I look down and doing well over 100mph. Took some getting use to.This bike handles awesome, even in the twisties, not that we have many here in Illinois.

Yea, I looked at a lot of the fork deflectors on the inter web, and I really hope the windshield fixes the problem. The fork deflectors just look hideous to me. Like gluing a giant clown nose on to the front of a nice sports car. Giant wind shields and fairings sticking out everywhere just ruins the whole look and feel of the street glide. Oh well, I'll see how it goes, but I have a feeling I'll be trading for a road king as soon as I am able too. Lol

They really work and do take time to grow on you... but worth it...

I'm one of those that couldn't bring myself to put on the fork fangs, I was actually at the dealership to buy the fangs and at the last second opted for the fairing deflectors. I also added a 8 inch freedom shield too, between the 2 I can ride at highways speeds without getting beat up. My wife noticed a difference immediately when I put the new windshield on, she can hear the radio now and we're capable of hearing each other at highway speeds.

I did the windshield, fairing deflectors and fork fangs. Buffeting is not in my vocabulary!
I now have the Hard lowers w/storage bins and love them!

Thank you guys for all the help!
I just installed the lower fairing air deflector, or I think they call it a dog dish or something. Lol
I noticed much more of a difference with the air deflector than with the wind shield. It is actually rideable from 50 to 60 now! But the buffitting was in full effect at 70 MPH. I'm going to order the freedom shield, hopefully the combination of the two will make the difference. The guy in the parts department said those side air deflectors didn't do anything to help against the buffitting. I might try the cheap non adjustable ones first before I spend a hundred and twenty bucks. I will look into those fork deflectors, I really hate the way they look, but if they really help, I'll get them.
Does anyone have those soft lowers that clip around the crash bars? I was wanting to check those out for winter riding.

Best of luck until you figure out your needs. Freedom Shield 7" worked great for me. I made several stiff cardboard templates from 5" to 10" and found 7" provided me the best view and best wind defection. I don't like looking thru it.. Over is better for me. There is just enough recurve to throw the majority of head on wind over the top of my helmet.im not a fan of extreme recurve like KlockWerks. Just looks like it's all melted. Side Fairing deflectors help more with the Extreme Florida heat but with them closed I can light a cig with a zippo at any speed.
I have the soft lowers and only used them a few times when the 15 was new. We are stuck in a prep equal oven in Florida ( rarely below 80 and often 95 plus year round). I did not use them enough to really test em.. They did keep legs dry in rain. My mech suggested I don't use em here as they block the cooling air to the engine.
I'm planning several trips north the fall and winter and plan to give them a good test.
I absolute love my 15 FLHXS. It's my First Harley and first bike ever ridden or owned so I'm not the best advisor out there... Just My Opinion.

I can't wait until my shield gets here, I'm going to go to the dealer today and see if they have the fork fangs in stock so I can look at them. I'm really trying to get over the way they look if they make the ride better. Really the main thing that makes me upset is the fact that I'm spending hundreds of dollars to make my bike rideable. It just makes me sick. All of my Hondas, and Harleys I've owned, I've never had to do this before. I've never had to spend money to make a brand new bike rideable. Every other motorcycle I've owned has never had a big bat wing fairing. This fairing just messes up everything. When I bought my road king, it had a windshield on it and the ride home sucked! The wind came of the top of the shield and smacked my helmet around. As soon as I pulled in my driveway, I removed the shield and threw out. The problem was solved. The ride was super smooth after I got rid of that shield. I still own a Honda VFR 800fi and when I ride it, it is as smooth as glass, I don't even know I'm wearing a helmet. Seriously! That smooth. My road king and sportster were amazing also, no wind problems whatsoever. I think the problem is that I have owned many other bikes, and I know what a smooth ride feels like. The fairing just does not work for me. It just makes the ride really rough, and you can't just remove it like you can with a windshield. Your stuck with it and your only option is to bolt stuff all over it. It just sucks.

Try not to think of it as making your bike rideable, just more comfortable.

I think I read it somewhere on here...Street Glide, the bike we hate to love!
Sure isn't nice on the wallet but I love it!

I'm 169cm tall small frame Asian living in little tiny red dot call Singapore. Anyway, would like to know what type of fork fangs you guys installed? My year 13SG has lower vent fairing, 7" klock Werks Flare shield, triple tree under cover. Thought all can help, but I'm getting turbulence from just the side of tank rushing to my chin. When I checked about the fork fang from HD but it's not compatible for SG. But you guys did installed it. So can you let me know what is it and from?

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I'm needing suggestions on how to make my 2016 street glide special rideable above 50 MPH. The buffitting, and turbulence is so bad there is no way I can ride this bike. I've owned lots of bikes, I traded in my road king and my sporty to get this street glide, and I've never experienced this terrible paint shaker effect on any other bike I've ever ridden. It really sucks! And, I really don't want to have to buy a bunch of stuff that bolts on the bike and makes it look ridiculous, but somehow makes it rideable. A twenty five thousand dollar bike should not need a bunch of accessories slapped all over it to make it ride somewhat smooth.
Anyway, sorry about the rant, please let me know how you guys get around this problem, I tried to take the bike back and trade it in on a road king, but they told my brand new bike was not worth anything, and they wouldn't even consider taking it on trade. So now that I'm stuck with this bike, I've got to do something.
Thanks guys.

Hi there,
I'm in the Uk and suffered similar problems to yourself.
I looked long and hard at what could be done as anything I bought would have to come Stateside and non-returnable really.
I opted for a Klock Werks 8.5" Flare screen.
Problem solved and bike run up to over 110mph with no hint of wobble or weave. Solid.
I'm 6'1" and the bike is now a keeper.
Try it .... You won't be disappointed.
Looks great too without losing it's more sporty stance

Hey guys, all jokes aside, can I remove the fairing and run just a road king headlight? If I remove the fairing, it's a road king right?

Lol.. But the road King. Some will trade..

I skimmed the posts and didn't see anything on this, but have you made sure that the fairing vent is open? This reduces head buffeting by a bit. I thinks it's around 25-30% better compared to my 2008 Electra Glide Standard. I put a 4" on that, and am happy with the stock one on my '15 FLHXS. I'm also 6'3" and don't really find the wind to be an issue, but that's just me.

Hey flhxsrider, are you referring to the vent on the top just behind the windshield?
Yes, I have opened and closed that vent several times trying to find some kind of relief, but it doesn't matter if it's open or closed, there is no difference at all for me.

I am 6'2" i tried the HD 7 inch wind spliter and it did not help much. I then went with the Klockwerks 8.5 inch windshield and it did the trick.

This is exactly my path to success, although I have the adjustable lower fairing wings as well
