FP3, The Auto-Tune Process Explained

What an awesome thread. Would like to confirm the following: If I autotune and get X number of fields and apply, then start again - will the next time I apply overwrite the first run? Or, will it add to it until I finish with the flash step?

Thanks in advance - STURGIS HERE WE COME - going out on Sunday!

Try to understand the APPLY aspect.... once you APPLY a session to your map in autotune, it overwrites existing blocks with completed ( shown in GREEN ) blocks. Your table with then be BLANK and it continues the autotune. At this point is uses the most current information and continues to populate the table. Once you FINISH the tune... all of the information is stored in an empty slot on the FP3 and flashed to the ECM as a completed map.

Remember if you APPLY a tune, it's not complete, you are just using current data until you FINISH and flash. So each time you APPLY, you are adding current data.

I don't do the APPLY.... I prefer to work on the tune progress by monitoring the table and FORCE THE TUNE where it's needed. The table provides a a great visual reference for doing this, but once you APPLY, you lose that reference with the table being wiped clean.... even though the previous data is being used....you just don't have a visual on what you still need to be populated.

Very nice Bluebowtie it looks as though you got a bunch of box's filled in in a short amount of riding time I have not tried to Auto Tune with my Power Vision yet I will be trying this feature out shortly I do like the fact that with the PV mounted to my handle bars I will be able to see the auto tune screen and know what areas of the tune I need to work on while I'm riding

Watch the auto tune video on you tube so you don't waist a bunch of time riding around thinking your auto tuning and your not. I did this.

Yep - understand. It is like doing a bunch of dyno runs and then seeing what happens. Will give a full report after sturgis.

Thanks again Todd for a great write up. After using the canned map for about 10 months I decided to go ahead and try AT after re-reading your article. I went on a 292 mile ride today and felt I was able to fill more than I thought I would. Here's to filling it up even more. The bottom of the screenshot is cut off by a couple rows, but they are empty so not a big deal.

Thanks again for your insight!

So I tried to teach the higher RPM today. I sure don't like winding the snot out of this bike. 6500 and I still have not found the rev limiter.

It's odd..I found the rev limiter a few times before I installed my FP3..now it seems to have "disappeared". Lol. The hard part for me has been populating the bottom right of the autotune.. 100% throttle @ 4000 rpms = 105+ mph. Hard to do that very often without being paranoid of who's watching..

Lower gears = slower speeds

Yeah, I know..but, I am a little apprehensive about really winding it out that much in low (or any) gears. I have hit 6000RPM in 1st and 2nd before and still have not hit the rev limiter..anything more than that and I feel like I am doing damage..maybe not, just how I feel. I gotta get out on some country roads soon..my day to day riding does not allow much room for hitting 6000RPM + in any gear..too many cars, pedestrians, traffic signals, cops, etc.

6k is 6k weather your in 1st or 6th. I'm with you though I'm not a fan of winding it out that high.

Rev limiter is bumped to 6200-6300 if my memory serves me correctly...I have hit it in every gear up to 4th..

You are correct..I got up there and it hit just over 6000..I had been just barely missing it. I had previously hit it in 1st and 2nd, but nothing higher..That is moving pretty well to hit it in 4th, I'd think..

I'm a throttle junkie

I call it throttle therapy....

So I changed out the Crusher mufflers for some CVO's and I've been pretty happy with them. The canned map from V&H runs pretty good but I can never seem to leave well enough alone.
So I'm back auto tuning again. Like some of you guys posted I've always been a little hesitant to redline her but I realized I needed to in order to get those lower right blocks filled. And after reading Spazz's tutorial and a couple of the other guys I started runner her pretty hard. I've been running through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to the rev limiter ( seems around 6100) a lot. It obviously gets there quick in 1st, pretty quick in 2nd, and fairly fast in 3rd. But in 4th it just seems to fade out at around 5500 rpm. I'm staying on it WOT and it just seems like it wants to quit. At that point I'm rolling 110+. Just seems a little weird. Has anybody else experienced the same problem?

Perfect conditions help... I was on a slight downhill grade when I did 4th... wind at your back helps too... lol!!! You are outside the powerband due to the way our 103's are built ( stock ) so you need all the help you can get to get there... lol!!!

97AT.jpg101at.jpgSo the day be fore yesterday I started the AT. Had a good day of riding and finished up that night with 84 blocks. I'm thinking pretty good start. The next day I fire her up and it says 76 learned. It lost 8 greenies and they were the hard earned ones. High RPM/ HighTPS. This happened when I was tuning last May also, and from what's been posted here that seems not out of the ordinary. I was hoping the FP3 update that I downloaded might of taken care of that issue but it doesn't seem to be the case. After I finished my ride last night I had 97 learned cells ( and having been kicked by the mule a couple of times already ) I took a screen shot for reference and "applied". The weather's cooled down a little the past few days and I went for a nice long ride today, about 5-6 hours. I finished up with 101 learned cells. Screen shot and "applied". Obviously a lot of dupes but a side by side shows 25 different cells learned on the 101 screen. That should give me 122 greenies and I think I'm going to call that good. Although I might actually do a little putzing around town tomorrow and see if I can get a few more of those upper left ( low stress ) blocks filled.
